Dressing up a yard with small flower gardens is a great way to make it look nicer, but there are steps you will need to take to keep the weeds out of these areas. Weeds naturally grow in areas where soil is present, but there are ways you can keep them away. Here are two easy, inexpensive ways to keep weeds out of your flower gardens.
Line With Weed Fabric
Before you begin planting your flowers and bushes, you will need to prepare the area for this. You can start by choosing the area where the garden will be, and you can separate this area with paving blocks or rocks.
Next, you will need to till up the ground so the soil is fresh and loose. You may even want to consider adding additional soil to the area. Purchasing bags of soil is perfect for small garden areas, or you could get an entire truckload of soil if the area is large.
One of the most important steps in this process is lining the ground with weed fabric. Weed fabric is something you can purchase in rolls, but this is often expensive to buy. Instead of buying weed fabric, you could use items you have around your house. These items will serve the same purpose and may hold up as well as weed fabric:
- Old bed sheets or towels
- Several layers of newspapers
- Burlap bags
- Garbage bags or grocery bags
After choosing one of these items, you must place it over the ground where the garden will be, and make sure you overlap the items to avoid gaps.
Create Homemade Weed Killer
No matter how well you line the ground with weed fabric, you may still see weeds popping up. To stop this, you can make your own weed killer. Not only is this inexpensive to make, but it also is very effective for controlling most types of weeds. To make this you must mix the following ingredients together:
- 1 gallon apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup of salt or sea salt
- ½ cup dishwashing liquid (Dawn works well)
You can mix these together in a bucket and then place the solution in a spray bottle. You can use this weed killer as often as needed to keep the weeds away.
